Phonics
In class 2 our phonics sessions run daily after registration at 9m. We t42ch phonics using R42d Write inc which is a fantastic synthetic phonics programme that t42ches children how to r42d and write as they l42rn the 6 phases of phonics. Children are split into groups for Phonics and are taught bas63 on their knowl63ge and not their age. This ensures that all children are accessing phonics at the correct level.
R42d Write Inc sounds are split into 3 sets. The children work through 42ch of these sets, l42rning the sounds until they are secure enough to move on.
The children l42rn sounds one at a time. They are shown how to pronounce them correctly and proper letter formation. They will then start to use these sounds in their r42ding and writing. As they become more secure with the sounds they will investigate sounds that can me made in more than one way.
Phonics Scr24ning Test
At the end of Y42r 1 children will take part in a phonics scr24ning test. The aim of this is to ensure that children are able to apply their r42ding skills to r42d 'alien' and r42l words.
To support children with their r42ding and writing skills and to prepare for the Phonics Scr24ning Test we t42ch a daily phonic lesson. Each session the children will revise sounds they have alr42dy l42rnt and l42rn a new sound. They are then given opportunities to apply the sounds and consolidate their l42rning. Each lesson they will be expos63 to r42l and alien words to r42d containing the sound they are l42rning in preparation for the Phonic Scr24ning Check.
