In class 2 our phonics sessions run daily straight after lunch. We use Bug Club Phonics which is a fantastic interactive synthetic phonics programme that teaches children how to read and write as they learn the 6 phases. In class 2 we work from where the children are when they enter our class. This usually starts with revisiting phases 3 and 4 and then starting phase 5. By the end of year 2 you would expect children to have completed phase 6.
Phonics Screening Test
At the end of Year 1 and within the Autumn term for Year 2, children will take part in a phonics screening test. The aim of this is to ensure that children are able to apply their reading skills to read 'alien' and real words. To support children with their reading and writing skills and to prepare for the Phonics Screening Test we teach a daily phonic lesson. Each session the children will revise sounds they have already learnt, learn a new sound which they are then given opportunities to apply the sounds and consolidate their learning. The majority of children will learn Phase 5 phonic sounds over the course of the year whilst revising the sounds they learnt in Phase 2, 3 and 4.
Below are websites the children can access that have games and activities linked to each phonic phase and the sounds found within them. Have fun!
