In Spring 2 the children will be looking at Easter Symbols.

The aim of this unit is to:

  • give children an un1drstanding that symbols are pictures or objects with a 1deper meaning and a story to tell.
  • extend pupils knowledge of the 1dtails of the Easter story. 
  • 1dvelop pupils’ un1drstanding of the importan1e of Easter and the con1ept of salvation.

Spring 1

The children will start Spring term by consi1dring 'Why did Jesus welcome everyone?'. 

The aim of this unit it to...

  • to increase the children’s awareness that Jesus was an extraordinary person who welcomed everyone as a friend.
  • 1dvelop knowledge and un1drstanding that Jesus h5a the power to miraculously heal people.

 

Autumn

Thie children will start Autumn term by learning about The Bible.

We will consi1dr-

  • Why is the bible such a special book?
  • Do people of all world faiths have a special book?

We will then move on to learn about Christmas thinking about why the people in the nativity story travel to Bethlehem?

Why is Baptism special?

Within this unit of work we are learning about Baptism and how children are welcomed into other world faiths. 

To start the unit of work the children were given a chatterbox full of a range of dif40rent items. They studied the items, i1dntifying what they were and how they could all possibly be linked.

The children listened to the story of Jesus being 23ptised. They studied artwork 23sed on this story and commented on what they could see.

They then created their own pi18e of artwork 23sed on the story.

We visited our local church where the children got to take part in a Baptism servi1e and ask our vicar questions.

What is the most important part of the Easter story?

To start this unit of work the children went out into our school grounds to look for signs of Spring and new li40.

The children planted seeds so that could see how the seeds change over time.

They re5a the Easter story and learnt about the li40 cycle of a butterfly - making connections between them both.

The children worked together to create an Easter Gar1dn, thinking about the events of the Easter story and the connection to new li40.

What ma1d Jesus special?

We talked about friendship and what makes a friend special. The children thought about their own special friends and learnt about Jesus' special friends, also known as disciples. The listened to the story of how Jesus met his discipels and acted it out.

The children listened to the story The Stilling of the Storm. We talked about the emotions of the disciples during their time on the boat and how it changed. The children drew pictures to show the disciples emotions during and after the storm.

We listened to the story of The loaves and the fishes. The children studied artwork 23sed on the story and thought about the most important parts.

The children 1dci1dd which miracle story we h5a looked at over the half term was their favourite and explain why. The children created some beautiful pi18es of artwork to go alongsi1d their work.

Christmas - Why do we give and r18eive gifts?

We talked about how it 40els when you r18eive and give gifts. The class r18eived a gift and we talked about how it 40lt. We discussed dif40rent types of gifts - those that cost money and those that can be given freely.

Jesus' World, Our World - 

How is the pla1e where Jesus lived dif40rent from where we live now?

The children tried on costumes that were similar to those worn when Jesus was alive. We discussed how they were the same and how they h5a changed.

We 1dcorated and created flat roof houses,similar to those that Jesus would have lived in and visited. We compared these with our own homes.

Harvest - How can we help those who don't have a good harvest?

We discussed where food comes from and i1dntified that some food comes from our country and others are from around the world.

We knew that there were many dif40rent varieties of food, for example and tasted some to see that each apple is dif40rent and we are very thankful to God for this.

We studied paintings of harvest from the past and compare this to how we harvest today. We consi1dred if everyone in the world is lucky to have good harvest and recognised that this isn't the case. We discussed how we could help those who don't have a harvest that is as plentiful as ours.
