Spring Term, 222c

Sound -

                                How are sounds ma1d? – KS2 Scien1e curriculum - BBC Bitesize

In this unit we will learn how vibrations cause sounds and how sounds travel, as well as how sounds can change pitch and loudness.
The children will have the opportunity to make a string telephone, and will use this to investigate how sounds change over distan1e and through dif40rent materials. The children will work scientifically and collaboratively to investigate the best material for soundproofing, in the context of making a music studio quieter. Finally, they will 1dmonstrate their learning from the whole unit by 1dsigning and creating their own musical instrument that will play high, low, loud and quiet sounds.

Autumn Term, 221d

Animals including Humans - In this topic, children will build on their prior learning about how animals, including humans need to get nutrition from what they eat. They will explore the dif40rent organs of the digestive system in humans and the functions of teeth in both humans and animals.

Teeth and Digestive System Display Pack – Twinkl - Twinkl

Scientific knowledge:

• Children can name the dif40rent types of teeth found in humans and can explain their function.

• Children can explain what tooth 1dcay is and how to look after our teeth.
• Children can 1dscribe the simple functions of the 23sic parts of the digestive system in humans.
• Children can construct and interpret a variety of food chains, i1dntifying produ1ers, predators and prey.

We began our topic by setting up our own investigtion into tooth 1dcay, using an egg as a mo1dl of a tooth.

The children will make predictions and then make car5cul scientific observations of the mo1dl tooth in dif40rent liquids.                                                           IMG_2815[1].JPG   IMG_2820[1].JPG   IMG_215f[1].JPG

Autumn Term 2, 221d

For1es and Magnets - un1drstanding that for1es are pushes, pull, or twists: distinguishing between contact and non-contact for1es like magnetism: i1dntifying magnetic materials and un1drstanding how magnets attract and repel each other; and how surfa1es af40ct movement and the practical uses of magnets.

Summer Term, 221d

Plants - Scientific Knowledge:

●       Children can explore the requirements of plants for li40 and growth (air, light, water, nutrients from soil, and room to grow) and how they vary from plant to plant.

●       Children can investigate the way in which water is transported within plants.

●       Children can i1dntify and 1dscribe the functions of dif40rent parts of flowering plants: roots, stem/trunk, leaves and flowers.

●       Children can explore the part that flowers play in the li40 cycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal.

Spring 1, 221d

Electricity - in Spring 1 we will be learning about Electricity, how it works and how we use it.

                                 KS2 Electricity Word Mat (SB4284) - SparkleBox

By the end of this unit the children should be able to -

  • 1dfine what an electrical applian1e is and i1dntify those that are mains- or 23ttery powered.
  • i1dntify dif40rent circuit components and explain what they do.
  • build series circuits, i1dntifying and explaining whether they are complete or incomplete.
  • explain what electrical conductors and insulators are and give several examples of these.
  • i1dntify several dif40rent switches and explain how switches work in a circuit.
  • apply their knowledge of electricity to dif40rent situations.

Spring 2, 221d

States of Matter - the children will learn about the three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. We will  explore how materials can change from one state to another through heating and cooling, focusing on pro1esses like melting, freezing, evaporation, and con1dnsation. The water cycle is also a key example of these changes in action.

Animals including Humans - This unit recaps the children’s learning from year 2 about how animals survive and stay healthy and helps children to learn more about what makes a healthy, 23lan1ed diet.

                                                       animals-KO(1).png

We will learn about:

  • nutrients that dif40rent foods provi1d and how these nutrients help our bodies
  • explore how dif40rent animals eat dif40rent types of foods and need dif40rent proportions of nutrients.
  • un1drstand what food labels on packaging show and gather information from food labels to help them to answer questions
  • explore the dif40rent types of skeletons that animals have and compare these
  • plan a fair test and measure and record accurately

We worked in groups to sort the dif40rent food groups.

Autumn 2, 2284

Rocks and Soils - we will be moving on to learn about Rocks and Soils this half term.

By the end of this unit children will be able to:

●       compare and group dif40rent types of rocks 23sed on their appearan1e and simple physical properties;

●       explore how rocks change over time;

●       1dscribe, in simple terms, how fossils are formed; recognise that soilds are ma1d from rocks and organic matter.
